Review: Dances With Smurfs

December 31, 2009

Here’s a roundup of some good reviews of Avatar:

Here’s Ross Douthat.

Here’s John Podhoretz.

And here’s Jonah Goldberg.

Douthat again.

I’m mostly with J-pod.  The movie was one long cliche, but it really was visually spectacular and well worth the ticket price if you see it in 3-D.  In terms of plot, characters and story though?  Well, I wouldn’t bother seeing it in 2D.

A lot of these review made it sound like the aliens won. How can anyone think that? They won the battle but can’t win the war. Just look at any colonial history anywhere. The best defense I can think of for these guys is to get humans to think they’re really cute so that the humans will boycott any companies trying to hurt the aliens to get at the unobtainium.

I had trouble with a few plot holes and am not usually into depressing movies or special-effects movies, but this was pretty gripping.

Yeah one of the reviews to which I didn’t link said that after the human POWs leave the surface of Pandora in the last few minutes of the movie Parker (the head corporate guy) should just give the order to nuke the site from orbit. Robot Chicken should do that bit. That would be funny.

Ultimately you’re right. In the long run Ewoks can’t beat the Empire.
