On The Symbolism of Being Assimilated

A friend calls my attention to this CNET article about a Borg-cube themed grooms cake:

Noting the various ships fighting the Borg cube, the CNET author supposes that “gathering of alien species united for a common cause is a metaphor for the unity of a wedding, or something like that.”  I guess that’s a more charitable interpretation than the more obvious one, which is that the groom sees the wedding as a process of assimilation in which he is losing his individuality and free will as his personality is subsumed into a collective entity called marriage, but perhaps I read too much into it.
